Without antibiotic treatment, staph infection has a huge fatality rate, of around 80%. Even with antibiotic treatment, there is a 15% to 50% of death depending on the health and age of the patient. The fatality rate also depends on the antibiotic resistance of the particular strain.
Staph infection can be treated with penicillin. However in cases of penicillin resistant strains of the bacteria, other antibiotics or a combination of several are employed the keep the infection in check. It is contagious and hence any kind of contact with the infected wound must be contained.
